Jacki-O thinks free books are ‘The Write Stuff’

Name: Jacki-O

What is your job? I'm a recording artist, model and author who loves life and tries to live it to the fullest.

What social causes are most important to you? I believe strongly in organizations that provide aide for the helpless and those without a voice, like children. I also support campaigns that encourage literacy.

What charities do you support – and how? Since 2008 I have been a part of The Write Stuff Literacy Campaign that travels across the country providing free books for non-profits as well as networking opportunities for other book lovers.
In 2010 I became the Ambassador for Community Options, which provides assistance for those with special needs. As I am working, I want to make sure I am doing all I can to give back to those who support me and who might benefit from something I have to offer. I am not just an entertainer and author; I am a mother as well.

Do you have a passion for one in particular -- is there a personal tie? Reading is important to me because it gives everyone the opportunity to speak through words. As a parent, I think that working with organizations that help those unable to help themselves is something all of us should be interested in. Celebrities have such a powerful platform at their disposal. We should make sure to do all we can to use it to bring attention to areas we see need the help.

Is there a particular way you would want to encourage readers to be involved? Just be as proactive as you can. Don't think you have to have a title or be on the radio or TV to make a difference or reach other to others. You can look for organizations in your area that help others join the addiction to books. If there is not an organization, maybe there is a library or individuals you might know who can benefit. As someone who is a reader, you can do something as simple as share your favorite book with someone who you know is not a big reader. Another point may be to find books that relate to the interests of those you know. Take the Harry Potter books and the Twilight series. Both of those began with books and now look at what they have spawned. You can use those movies to say something like, "Hey, if you thought that was cool, you should read the book to see what they may not have been able to include." I have found that to be an effective way of getting to the interests of others. You can also visit the website www.dothewritethang.com to see how you can join the cause.

How would you define social responsibility? For me to be socially responsible means that we don't take the time we have been given for granted. Even the little things have meaning, so we need to make sure we use whatever platform we have in life to make a difference however we can.
