Name:
Shaney jo Darden
What
is your job? I
am the Founder and Global CEO of the Keep A Breast Foundation.
What
is your mission at Keep A Breast? Keep
A Breast's main goal is to eradicate breast cancer for future generations. We
provide support programs for young people impacted by cancer and educate people
about prevention, early detection, and cancer-causing toxins in our everyday
environment.
How
does Keep A Breast have a connection to Art?
My
background is in Art and Design. I worked for many years in the action sports
industry as a designer and from that part of my career I was able to take all
the friendships I made with artists, brands, and athletes and translate what I
had learned into a unique breast cancer awareness fundraiser. I created the Keep
A Breast casts as a way to harness the power of art to communicate complex
feelings and thoughts about health, the female form, and ultimately about
breast cancer. I don’t know what else really touches people the way art
can.
I’m
a collector and I buy from my emotions. I love how a piece of art makes me feel
more than just art on a wall I try to live life as art. I think the same way
about my tattoos. They all have an emotional connection, a story to them.

Why
do you have a passion for this cause in particular, is there a personal tie? My
personal passion is not so much about cancer in particular it’s more about
health and prevention. I’m driven to help young people learn about how they can
prevent disease through diet, exercise, and living a lifestyle that is free
from toxins. Twelve years ago when I started Keep A Breast everything was about
“the cure”. I didn’t buy into the whole pink ribbon, drug research, money for a
cure thing. But I did believe you could prevent disease, which is why my focus
was on young people and getting them into these habits at an early age.
Is
there a particular way you would want to encourage readers to be involved? Absolutely!!
Become a MEMBER! Volunteer, sign up for our email list – become an online
street teamer. As always add our social network and share our life saving
information with your friends and family.
Keep
A Breast has many musician ambassadors as well as many that have had their
breasts casted and painted casts for KAB. Many of them donate songs to KAB for
use in our PSA and campaign videos such as Pierce The Veil, Allen Stone and
Dead Sara.
How
would you define social responsibility? I
define social responsibility as making yourself number one. Take the time to
take care of yourself physically and mentally. If you do this you will
automatically be making smart choices for the environment and your community
which leads to compassion for others and ultimately a better world.
Do
you have any tattoos that relate to your work? I
do have the Keep A Breast heart logo tattooed on my wrist and so does many of
my staff. It's also super exciting because I see teens on Instagram and Facebook
always posting their KAB tattoos!
Your artist? There
is a beautiful shop in San Diego called Two Roses that is owned by a painter
and artist and my good friend Randy Janson who has done many of my tattoos - http://www.tworosesinc.com/
